India won’t allow driverless cars if they take away jobs

In language that is sure to frighten the likes of Google, Tesla, and every other company with a foot in the driverless car game, India’s road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari has said that driverless cars will not be allowed in the country if they take away jobs, reports the HindustanTimes.

“We won’t allow driverless cars in India. I am very clear on this. We won’t allow any technology that takes away jobs. In a country where you have unemployment, you can’t have a technology that ends up taking people’s jobs.” — Nitin Gadkari Highways minister 7/25/2017

India is one of the top destinations tech companies are focusing their resources on for growth. With a consumer market of 1.2 billion people, if India actually ends up not allowing driverless cars in the country it will effectively seal off one-sixth of the world’s population from the autonomous car market.  – Michael Grothaus (FastCompany)

After working in technology for 4 decades, it seems that technology doesn’t take jobs, but rather creates a new employment track that is fascinating and innovative. Yes training is needed to participate, but that should be an obstacle that we can tackle.

However my logic could be skewed, since I am eagerly awaiting autonomous cars and more innovation. — the editor

Holi – Festival of Colors

Holi is one of the most happy Hindu holidays – filled with joy and fun. It’s a spring festival in India and Nepal, also known as the festival of colors or the “festival of love“.

The festival signifies the victory of good over evil, the arrival of spring, end of winter, and for many a festive day to meet others, play and laugh, forget and forgive, and repair broken relationships, and is also celebrated as a thanksgiving for a good harvest.

My friend Harjinder says: “It also signifies everyone is equal as anyone can color anyone and everyone looks like a splash of colors.”

It lasts for two days starting on the Purnima (Full Moon day) falling Monday, March 13. 2017 in the Gregorian calendar.

World Water Day March 22

World Water Day is bringing attention to the astonishing statistic that ONE-SIXTH of the world’s population does NOT have access to fresh water.

In rural India, it takes 40 Cranks of the handle to fill one bucket of Water!  This is a daily chore for many families. (Imagine what you could or could not do with one bucket of water.)

The Indian company, Span Pumps Private Limited has set up 50 solar pumps recently, in several states. The pump operates without batteries and the sun powers a photo voltaic cell to pump out 5,ooo to 7,ooo liters of water. The installation cost is high,  but is subsidized by public funds. Their innovation does not stop there, the have also created the JOY PUMP, which is in fact a Teeter-Totter or See Saw. You can see the children playing on it, on the web site!
