The Beeswax Workshop – a great Book!

Image resultThis new book has EVERYTHING!

You will learn how to make over 100 items: household cleaners, beauty balms, natural gifts for your friends and family and even hot glue.
The instructions are step by step so the projects are fun and easy to complete.

If you have tried to clean the toxics out of your home….. this is definitely the NEXT STEP. And it is way more fun than reading the labels (with impossibly small print) on all that horrid stuff in the supermarket and drug stores.

There are historical facts about the use of some of these awesome make-it-yourself items…. and facts to help motivate you to try something new.

For example, did you know:

Perfume and cologne are two of the more toxic personal care products on the market. Synthetic fragrance has been linked to dermatitis, asthma, insulin resistance and even cancer. Perfumes and fragrances represent more than 3,000 undisclosed chemical compounds. Manufacturers are not required to list the actual chemicals on the label. Using these recipes, those with sensitivities to fragrance can create their own unique solid perfume blends based on scents that they tolerate well.  from page 85

Some of the recipes are so wonderful, Calendula Hand Balm sounds like what my poor dry hands have been begging for …. (on page 79). There are so many things to try: bronzers, vinegar rinses for hair (my Mom did this), sunscreen and candles.  This book is packed with great information and recipes and …. you’ll get new ideas on hobbies and personal care and more!

It’s available on Amazon  and other stores / bookstores where fine products and great books are sold!

Ava Anderson Non Toxic

I’m trying something new!
Finding clean, simple, non-toxic beauty products is a challenge. Ava Anderson Non-Toxic gets it!

There are lots of products to choose from, so I picked several items that are “pain points” and harder to find in non-toxic form.

I started out with this order:
1 AVA-BBC02 (BB Cream Bisque (AVA-BBC02))
2 AVA-BA01 (Bleach Alternative (AVA-BA01))
1 AVA-DO01 (Deodorant – 2.65 oz Stick (AVA-DO01))
1 AVA-HS02 (Hand Soap Refill 16 oz (AVA-HS02))

I am so excited to find a bleach alternative, and it is easy to use. Just through the little packet in the washer, Voila!, it is color safe. No muss – no fuss, and you’ll get whiter clothes.

The foundation is creamy, easy to use (do you see a theme here yet? lol), even as I get more tan in the summer it blends in nicely – you don’t need much -and stays put. A great product.

If you are going start going green — get Deodorant without aluminum. This is really important. This one is natural and smells so good.  As for hand soap, this is a “no brainer” for clean hands, don’t rely on anti-bacterials….wash your hands with good soap. KISS – keep it simple sweetheart!

Cosmetics Freshness Date

I am always interested in new clean green products, especially in cosmetics, which is traditionally full of the “wrong stuff”.  This company, Odacité,  is dedicated to freshness and one of the few with a “date of manufacture”.  The freshest, purest organic ingredients from all over the world are formulated into age-defying blends. each ingredient retains full freshness and efficency.

Investigating Beauty

I have been on a campaign against parabens for 10 years.  Since I am not a chemist and most people didn’t understand what I was talking about and/or my explanation was lacking, voicing my concerns was not easy.  Suddenly, consumers understand and are carefully reading the mouseprint ingredient labels. EO is a local Marin County company that believes in pure products, and www.safecosmetics.org is a GREAT resource to help you stay away from the bad Stuff — a partial list to AVOID:

  • Paraben, methyl paraben propyl paraben [a preservative]
  • Diazolidinyl Urea
  • Petrolatum
  • Phthalates
  • Propylene Glycol
  • Sodium Lauryl / Laureth Sulfate
  • Stearalkonium Chloride
  • Colors / Dyes / Fragrances from synthetics
  • Triethanolamine

Look for words like certified organic manufacturer and pure plant based ingredients to help you make your purchases.

Safe and Green and on your Skin!

There are so many “natural” cosmetics that use chemicals, preservatives, dyes and unsafe components or processes. There are many alternatives to these crummy products. It is worth the investigation to find the best AND it is not simply a matter of picking a well known brand or a product line that proclaims “green, natural, organic” etc.

For a quick rule of thumb try this…. Read the ingredient list –  IF you can’t Eat it OR you can’t Spell it THEN leave it on the shelf. This works as a guide, but as the ingredient lists are in “mouse print” and often italics on a colored background [yes of course this is on purpose!] then sometimes I can’t read the individual items anyway.

Here is an alternative. We found this company at the Green Fest in SF – and the coconut skin lotion sample smells great, and would probably be a good topping on ice cream. [NO- don’t do that!] Take a look, I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised: http://www.100percentpure.com/index.htm 100% Pure has a huge variety. AND it is made locally, in Berkeley, CA. Wow, I am impressed!
