SMART Cars, Prius and fun

October 28, 2009 By: Jacqueline Smith Category: Energy Saving, Events No Comments →

I’ve seen so many great license plates on hybrids, here are a few:
On a Smart Car – MBZ LITE
On a Prius CO2 LMTD
then there are others
- breathe
- air4us
- lessgas
What have you seen?
I love the creativity. There should be a hybrid parade on earth day, like the passing of the torch we could pass the gas can (empty of course) from one hybrid to another up and down the state of California.

The Most Beautiful Recycling

To my mind quilting is the most amazing art  and when I quilt it allows me to use scraps and torn clothes and momentos that once again become useful. Many quilts in shows are all new material…. the Gee’s Bend Quilts would be a notable exception, with all quilts loving returned to a second life. Coming soon, 48 quilts from the 1880s to the 1940s are on display to inspire us: November 14 through June 6 at the de Young Museum in SF. Go see Amish Abstraction: Quilts from the Collection of Faith and Stephen Brown.

True Confession

October 21, 2009 By: Jacqueline Smith Category: Corporate Green, Energy Saving, Global Understanding No Comments →

I’m a writer. And my job of choice can create a huge mountain of waste. Technical manuals, stacks of printed research, revisions, walkthroughs…. it can be a paper storm. OR NOT!!

Think Different…errr … Differently!! Instead of writing a manual, post a manual! Make a web site that includes interactive video. Convince your customer, company, vendor that this ONLINE method of learning is the best, easiest, most flexible and best for updating.  It is secure, searchable, easy to archive and it doesn’t have to be stacked in the closet off the corridor next to the water cooler.

Your audience will enjoy this online version. If a printed referral guide is really necessary, keep it to one page front and back with the bare bones hints, tips and short cuts. Put the details on line., and link to related materials there. The addition of video or youtube can get the message across easily especially if you are trying to coach someone through an unfamiliar task that involves mannual steps and automated tasks. Be Creative.

When you think about efficiency another big green step is to use WEBINARS to transmit training. And even better, they can be recorded and reused. this is a huge savings is production cost, efficiency, adding flexibility, travel time/dollars  and great customer service.

It doesn’t have to be a pile of dusty paper manuals. It doesn’t have to be recycled in a secure bin every year….. Go Digital.

Wine Tasting – Poetic Cellars and more!

October 19, 2009 By: Jacqueline Smith Category: Events, Food No Comments →

I love wine tasting, but hate driving over to Napa and/or Santa Cruz or Medocino — which is a long haul. We have severals great local wine tasting spots. Here are my two favorites that have creative tastings that are carefully selected to bring together wines that may be new to you or are in areas you aren’t close to.

GC’s Tasting Cafe features Poetic Cellars

FROM THEIR EMAIL:
Please join us this Thursday October 22nd from 6pm to 8pm for a special wine event. Meet winemaker Katy Lovell from Poetic Cellars Winery in the Santa Cruz Mountains and taste several of her small production wines.
The cost of this event is $5.
Our next event is Thursday October 29th from 6pm to 8pm featuring wines and cheeses from France!
GC’s Tasting Café & Specialty Market | 657 Oak Grove Avenue, Menlo Park, Ca 94025

If this sounds great to you, sign up for their email, come to this event or many others….. See you there!

Another great local place is Vino Locale… located in downtown Palo Alto at 431 Kipling, this great wine bar looks like someones home, but don’t be fooled, tasty well prepared food and wine are within AND you can join this friendly group for fun and liquids. Vino Locale features a wonderful loca-vore menu, emphasis on organic and local. In the summer the back patio is paradise, a bit cold now, but keep it in mind for a sunny day.

I’m all for Wine Bars and getting to know our amazing wine producing area without driving around. This is ENERGY STAR wine tasting, friends! The Cask in San Carlos is my next stop. I’m going to check it out and let you know. Where is your favorite place??

Blog, tweet, talk, VM, phone… I blog because 140 characters are not enough. But 140 makes me FOCUS, so tweets are good too. The point is – Get the word out! There are so many green events  &   green issues all grabbing for your time. Make a choice, get involved!

And while you are exploring your “inner writer” and why… check out this blog on our Bloggers World Event in Las Vegas. Maybe what goes on at a blogger’s event in LV doesn’t stay in Vegas. Hah!

Cosmetics Freshness Date

October 13, 2009 By: Jacqueline Smith Category: Cosmetics, Health and Beauty No Comments →

I am always interested in new clean green products, especially in cosmetics, which is traditionally full of the “wrong stuff”.  This company, Odacité,  is dedicated to freshness and one of the few with a “date of manufacture”.  The freshest, purest organic ingredients from all over the world are formulated into age-defying blends. each ingredient retains full freshness and efficency.

This contest is going on now… here is the link: http://www.thedailygreen.com/living-green/win/

I know you have some great photos of your favorite places. Mine is Yosemite.  I love the sparkly granite faces in the early morning. I love the grassy meadows buzzing with dragonflies. I love the wind whispering through the aspens. I love sitting outdoors and watching all the exhausted climbers drag in while eating an ice cream. It’s all good, it is an amazing national resource.
