Sometimes you just gotta get AWAY!

July 28, 2009 By: Jacqueline Smith Category: Discover earth, Events, Global 3D view 1 Comment →

You may be a devoted greenster, but after all the composting and bicycling, you are still at home wishing for something more.  AN ADVENTURE?!

I love the water, but although going to the beach is my favorite pastime, I thought I’d check out kayaking. This is the best trip for beginners that I have found. And REI is a great store devoted to customer service, so I think this is my first choice.

Loon Lake Kayak  this REI adventure starts near near Lake Tahoe it is described as easy and active…3 to 5 hours of kayaking per day. Heck, I do 3 to 5 hours of spreadsheets a day, I am ready to switch.  I can do this! Pack the bags! I will let you know what I think.

Do you have other great “GET AWAY” suggestions? Let us know!

UPDATE after a week: I’m home know and back to work. I’m still thinking about the fun I had. I LOVED this trip. The camping was easy, fun and the food great. Dan and Maria did everything, they were so wonderful and welcoming. The water was clean and just cold enough, the vistas were beautiful. Loon Lake was gentle it was a great introduction to kayaking and I really got a taste for it. I liked the calm and the quiet sound of the water lapping against the kayak. I liked choosing where I was going and not being concerned if I didn’t navigate in a straight line.  This is so much different than white water rafting or cameoing. It was wonderful.   You can reach Dan and Maria at Current Adventures, and plan your own adventure:  530-333-9115

State of the Union – Texas Style

July 13, 2009 By: Jacqueline Smith Category: Discover earth, Global 3D view, Global Understanding No Comments →

from Austin, Texas…. Are we changing? I have a little greeneroo – o – meter…….you might like it, tell me how you observe changes to a greener world!

This week I was in Austin, Killeen, San Sabas, Eden, San Angelo…. TEXAS

  • Number of Prius sitings:  4
  • Bicyclist sitings: thousands
  • Number of Recycling containers: 2
  • Helpful response when I asked about recycling: 1
  • Ability to get a vegetarian meal: available at every meal

Texas has really started to slide down the slippery slope to green think [maybe by accident] but in BUSH country I was very surprised. On this trip, no one called me a tree-hugger, stupid, liberal pinko or any other such slur. How amazing! Congratulations Texas!!

–from your “left coast” friends.

p.s. In TX, why didn’t I see ANY solar power or collectors?… it was 104 degrees the whole week. Or wind generation?

Splish Splash Taking a … Shower

July 03, 2009 By: Jacqueline Smith Category: Global Understanding, Green Building No Comments →

You’d use a low flow shower head, but a great shower is essential for your emotional well-being? OK, try this shower head by Moen. It is worth a second glance, here is the info:

  • flow rate: 1.75 gallons per minute (gpm)
  • 30 percent than the standard rate of 2.5 gpm
  • The spray is strong, the velocity of the water is increased to make sure
  • Full name: Moen Envi Eco-Performance showerhead

Of course, to really save water, just go play in your neighbor’s sprinklers if they are still water in mid-day!
